Facilities

The facilities department is responsible for the major construction and repair of the District’s existing and new facilities. These facilities include a growing inventory of over 700,000 square feet of buildings and 115 acres of lawn, planters, sports fields, and parking lots.

The department includes a planner, an analyst, and an administrative assistant. Their activities include the planning, construction administration, and cost tracking of new classroom buildings, sports fields, office spaces, and general landscape areas. They coordinate new construction as well as renovations and major repairs with architects, engineers, as well as the District administration and staff. They also track the progress of projects as they go through design, State approval, construction, commissioning, and closeout phases.

Currently, the District is involved in a construction program that exceeds $100 million dollars. The projects include new classrooms, a library renovation, improved sports facilities, new swimming pools, a new continuation high school, and a fourth comprehensive high school. The local Bond program, C2004 passed by the voters in November 2004, has mainly funded these projects. Some of the new classroom construction will receive additional funding from the State School Facilities Program funded by the State School Construction Bonds passed in recent elections.

In additional to handling construction projects from start to finish, this group projects the District’s enrollment and translates those projections into needed classrooms. They then begin the task of planning where new classrooms should be placed and when they will be needed. This process looks back as much as ten years and forward five to ten years due to the length of time needed to design and construct school buildings. While the District’s growth has slowed in recent years, it remains a growing District that will continue to require good planning to stay ahead of the needs.
